Madison's hardest working Bluegrass band, Soggy Prairie, is proud to host the Madison Bluegrass Roundabout, a monthly series highlighting Southern Wisconsin's Bluegrass scene. The series will feature new and upcoming bands, as well as well established groups. Each month will feature a set from Soggy Prairie followed by a set from a guest band. This month’s guest band is The MillBillies!

Robert J
Thursday February 19th
Robert J. has been a mainstay in the Wisconsin music scene ever since releasing his first record Boys Town in 1986. Since then, he has released a total of 10 CDs. In 2003, he was named Wisconsin Male Vocalist of the year and has garnered over a dozen MAMA and WAMI Awards to date. Among other achievements, his song, "A Million Miles Away" won top honors in Billboard Song Contest, and in 2015 the Madison Area Music Association awarded Robert with the Lifetime Legacy Award for songwriting. He has had success with his bands, Boys Town, The Moon Gypsies, and The Rowdy Prairie Dogs and many remember him from his time hosting The Sunday Jams at Schenk's Corner (518 consecutive Sundays). Over the years Robert J. has shared the stage with many well known artists including The Beach Boys, Taj Mahal, The Subdudes, The Nitty Gritty Dirt Band, Delbert McClinton, LeAnn Rimes, John Eddie, Paul Thorn and many more. Recently, Robert released his patriotic protest song and video, America (Oh Say Can You See). The Isthmus wrote that it "is a song that not only sounds American, but one that does its best to illustrate what truly is American -- a spirit of patriotic dissent".

Michigan-based singer-songwriter and upright bassist Jon Letts blends jazz, orchestral, and contemporary influences into his original music. Born in the Upper Peninsula and recently active in Detroit, he studied with legendary UW–Madison bass professor Richard Davis, bringing virtuosity and soulful depth to every performance. Jon has performed across the Midwest and Canada, captivating audiences with his voice, bass, and dynamic live shows.

Birddog Blues Band

2023 Madison Area Music Awards winners the BirdDogBlues band carry on Madison's Blues tradition. Featured performer Mel Ford got started touring with the Muddy Waters band during the 70s before landing in Madison and teaming up with the legendary Paul Black, then striking out with his own band, Mel Ford & the Fairlanes, then joining up with "Westside" Andy Linderman in a powerhouse ensemble that ruled regional stages for nearly two decades. Singer and harmonica-man Ken "Birddog" Olufs was a longtime sideman with pianist Barrelhouse Chuck and an original member of The Jimmys. He enlisted Mel and two former Fairlanes, bassist/singer Tom McCarty (also formerly of The Midwesterners), and Steve Daugherty, longtime first-call drummer for many regional blues acts. With three different and dynamic vocalists, BirdDogBlues brings their audiences a rare variety of repertoire and style.

It started as a jam session in 1995 in a now burnt-out St. Paul hole-in-the-wall bar. Over 30 years later, the Urban Hillbilly Quartet is an award-winning Twin Cities-based ensemble that delivers an eclectic mix of musical styles, blending guitars, fiddle, accordion, bass and drums. On stage, the UHQ performs mainly original material—most of which can be found on their ten albums.
UHQ has been compared to R.E.M., The Jayhawks, Uncle Tupelo, The Grateful Dead, and The Waterboys.

Oddball ukulele legend Tiny Tim hailed Norton as “the greatest entertainer I have ever seen!” The Minneapolis Star Tribune called Jack “one of the most entertaining acoustic musicians in the Midwest.” His performances are an authentic throwback to a simpler time and bygone era.
